More than five years after their last appearance on season 9 of “The Walking Dead,” Rick Grimes and Michonne reunited in the spinoff series “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.” Originally planned as a trilogy of films, the project was retooled into a “prestige miniseries” by Scott M. Gimple in collaboration with the series’ co-creators, Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira.

The show’s creators have kept plans for the Grimes’ futures in the Walking Dead Universe under wraps. However, there are clues about what’s to come for The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live season 2.

Will There Be The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Season 2?

Will there be a The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Season 2?

Miniseries or limited series generally have a predetermined number of episodes. However, this term typically excludes series that are initially conceived as ongoing, such as the 177-episode show “The Walking Dead” which spanned 11 seasons.

AMC labels “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” as a “six-episode event series.” However, when the Rick and Michonne series was announced with six episodes at San Diego Comic-Con in 2022, Entertainment Weekly indicated that “those six episodes will not be a limited series, but rather the first season of a continuing series.”

In 2020, AMC’s “The Walking Dead: World Beyond” debuted as a “two-season limited event,” becoming the first Walking Dead series to have a predetermined end before its premiere. The series spanned two seasons with a total of 20 episodes.

Will Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira return for a second season of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live?

Lincoln and Gurira have not confirmed if “The Ones Who Live” season 1 is a finale for Rick and Michonne, but Gurira stated on “Talking Dead” in 2022 that the series would “complete their story.”

When asked if he views “The Ones Who Live” as a conclusive chapter or an open-ended story, Lincoln replied: “I’d like to think both. It can exist independently, yet hints at the possibility of more to come.”

What would The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live season 2 be about?

Rick and Michonne confront the daunting Civic Republic Military (CRM), a formidable force that abducted Rick years ago. CRM’s Lieutenant Colonel Donald Okafor entrusts Rick and Pearl Thorne with building a base for their summit, hinting at an opportunity to escape by igniting a rebellion against the CRM. This aligns with foreshadowed events from the first episode, where Rick shared his father’s account of burning crops to preserve their farm. The recurring theme of fire throughout the series, as seen on the key art, further suggests this potential path.

Loose ends on “Fear the Walking Dead” hint at a potential second season. Morgan Jones’ (Lennie James) message to Rick (“I’m gonna come and look for you, whether you’re at Alexandria or not”) could hint at their reunion, as evidenced by Easter eggs referencing Morgan on “The Ones Who Live.”

On “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon,” Carol (Melissa McBride) contacted Daryl (Norman Reedus) via long-range radio, relaying through static that “… came back.” However, the transmission was cut off before she could reveal who had returned.

Will The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live cross over with other Walking Dead spinoffs?

Gimple hints at a possible multi-show crossover among the Walking Dead spinoffs, connecting narratives from The Ones Who Live, Dead City, and Daryl Dixon.

“Each series can be watched independently,” Gimple explained to ComicBook. “However, viewers who follow all the shows may be rewarded with subtle connections. I’m committed to continuing this approach.”

Gimple added, “This story [on The Ones Who Live] has the potential to intersect with future stories. My ultimate goal is to eventually unite the narratives, either temporarily or more long-term.”
