Despite many Saturday Night Live sketches being adapted into films, few have achieved the cultural impact of MacGruber. Originating as a sketch in 2007, the franchise spawned a movie and a television series debuting in 2021.
Reports indicate a written script for a second season of MacGruber, but it remains unproduced. Creator Jorma Taccone envisions a more ambitious future, suggesting the franchise’s next step should be a Broadway musical.
“Through sheer luck, we managed to elevate it from an SNL sketch to ten sketches, a Super Bowl commercial, a movie, and now a TV show,” Taccone shared in an interview about his role directing episode 4 of Paramount+’s Knuckles series. “I believe the natural progression is a Broadway musical.”
Taccone discussed the “point at anything” scene from the *MacGruber* movie, emphasizing its ability to elevate a film with iconic moments.
Taccone revealed that their limited filming time made that particular scene significant. Despite the scene’s humor, they spent considerable time perfecting it, with Taccone recalling numerous takes due to its hilarity.
Coincidentally, Todd Phillips was present during the filming, and Taccone recalls feeling reassured by his apparent approval. He acknowledged that the scene was unconventional for someone to encounter and question the film’s concept.
For Taccone, a genuine and hilarious scene can elevate a film, regardless of its overall quality. He cited “Team America” as an example, particularly the barfing scene, which he found exceptionally humorous, especially when viewed with his mother-in-law.
