Chris Pine Admits He Was Stunned When Wonder Woman 3 Was Cancelled

Chris Pine expressed shock upon learning Warner Bros.’ decision to cancel the planned third installment of the Wonder Woman franchise. The first Wonder Woman film, widely praised as one of the best comic book movies of recent times, was a critical success within the DC Extended Universe (2012-2023). However, the sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, received mixed reviews and faced commercial challenges due to its 2020 release.

Despite the lackluster reception of “Wonder Woman 1984,” Warner Bros. and Patty Jenkins remained keen on collaborating on a third installment. However, this plan was reportedly shelved when the studio enlisted James Gunn and Peter Safran to restructure the DC Universe.

“Pine expressed disbelief that the opportunity to helm a billion-dollar franchise was declined, acknowledging that the reasons remain undisclosed. He emphasized Wonder Woman’s exceptional character and Patty Jenkins’ brilliance as a director.”

Despite Pine’s assumed departure, his past experiences had likely influenced this decision. He had encountered two near-death experiences within 75 years, shaping his perspective on life and the possibility of his return.

“It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back,” Pine admitted.

DC is developing a separate Paradise Island series. An earlier Amazons spinoff was planned, but it’s different from the current project. Director Patty Jenkins and original Wonder Woman star Lynda Carter have expressed that they do not plan to return to the franchise. Gal Gadot initially hinted at potentially reprising her role in the new DC Universe, but this seems less likely based on current information.

The first two Wonder Woman films are now available on both physical disc and digital platforms.
