Warner Bros. is near a substantial deal for the film rights to “Avengelyne,” a comics series by Rob Liefeld. The project, acquired through Margot Robbie’s production company, will star Robbie as the lead and be directed by Olivia Wilde. “Poor Things” writer Tony McNamara is penning the screenplay. Deadline, the source of the initial report, notes that “most deals are closed,” indicating this attempt to adapt the property is the closest to fruition.
Avengelyne, a fallen angel, battles demons and monsters as part of the Warhost of Heaven. Her extraordinary strength and weaponized blood make her a formidable force in the vein of Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets John Wick. This action-packed film, produced by the executive behind I Am Legend, The Losers, and Transformers, promises an exhilarating cinematic experience.
Avengelyne’s relatable tale of redemption evoked a deep connection with the audience, Liefeld explained. As a fallen angel tasked with saving humanity, her unfamiliarity with Earth forced her to adapt, injecting humor amidst the epic quest that propelled her journey.
In 2023, Liefeld aimed to launch an Avengelyne movie starring Gina Carano. By 2016, the project had shifted to Paramount, but Carano’s involvement ceased. Despite this, the property failed to secure a lead or finalize a script before Paramount’s option lapsed.
LuckyChap, the production company founded by Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara, will collaborate with Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon’s Genre shingle to produce upcoming projects.
– The rights deal for “Avengelyne” is projected to surpass the recent $2.5 million acquisition by Warner Bros. for the Josh Gad and Paul Walter Hauser biopic of Chris Farley.
– Creator Rob Liefeld has hinted at plans for a “Bloodstrike” movie and continues to develop “Prophet,” despite setbacks including the departure of writer Marc Guggenheim and star Jake Gyllenhaal.
