Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth Differ on Thor’s Avengers Role

Despite Chris Hemsworth’s belief that Thor has the least interesting role in the Avengers films, Robert Downey, Jr. disagrees, stating that the character brings something essential to the table. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Hemsworth described Thor as a “security guard” with limited development. However, Downey rejected this notion, praising Thor’s transformation in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame as a “hat trick.”

Hemsworth acknowledged fans’ and critics’ dissatisfaction with “Thor: Love and Thunder” in a candid interview. He expressed personal accountability for the perceived shortcomings of Thor’s storyline.

Hemsworth felt like a “security guard” for his team as he reviewed others’ dialogue and noticed the more engaging content they had. He questioned his character’s contribution, focusing on superficial qualities like his wig and costume instead of a substantial narrative. He acknowledged being part of a large production but felt replaceable due to his perceived limited importance.

Downey dissented.

“Thor, as a character, was challenging to adapt due to his implied limitations,” Downey explained. “However, Ken Branagh and Chris Hemsworth found a way to overcome them, making him both relatable and godlike.” Downey further praised Hemsworth’s portrayal, describing him as the most complex psyche among the Avengers. “He balances wit and gravitas with restraint, fire, and gentleness.”

Thor will be the first Marvel hero to star in a fifth solo movie. Marvel is reportedly seeking a director for the project. Gareth Edwards, the filmmaker behind “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” was briefly rumored to be in the running, but those rumors have since been dismissed.

Edwards acknowledged seeing the rumors and shared them with his girlfriend as a lighthearted joke. He messaged her a link accompanied by a playful remark to prevent her from discovering the information in an unexpected manner.
