Horror fans were captivated by “M3GAN” last year when the tale of a rogue AI doll took theaters by storm. With a 93% critical rating and a 78% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, a sequel was quickly teased. “M3GAN 2.0” is set to release next May, with several original cast members returning. Recently, Deadline announced that Ivanna Sakhno, known for her role as Shin Hati in Disney+’s “Star Wars: Ahsoka,” has joined the sequel’s cast.
Sakhno joins original stars Allison Williams and Violet McGraw in an undisclosed role described as a “major part.” Akela Cooper, who wrote the first installment, and Gerard Johnstone, who directed it, return for writing and directing duties, respectively. James Wan, Jason Blum, and Williams produce, with Johnstone, Mark Katchur, Michael Clear, and Judson Scott of Wan’s Atomic Monster banner serving as executive producers. Ryan Turek of Blumhouse, along with Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath from Divide/Conquer, also executive produce.
James Wan Says M3GAN Is “Coming Back in a Big Way”
Horror maestro James Wan reveals that the highly anticipated sequel to “M3GAN” is in the works.
In a November interview with Empire Magazine, Wan teased the sequel’s focus on the rising concerns surrounding artificial intelligence (AI). “The first film tapped into this fear at the perfect moment,” he said. “We’re definitely diving deeper into the AI universe with the sequel.”
What Is M3GAN About?
M3GAN, a lifelike AI doll, is designed as a child’s companion and a parent’s aide. Created by Gemma, a roboticist at a toy company, M3GAN interacts with the child, learning and evolving while providing friendship, education, and protection. Gemma, under pressure from her boss to finalize M3GAN, becomes the caretaker of her orphaned niece, Cady. Pairing Cady with the M3GAN prototype becomes Gemma’s solution, a decision with unforeseen consequences.
