Fresh off collaborating on “Oppenheimer,” Matt Damon and Casey Affleck will reunite for a new heist movie penned by Affleck. Inspired by classic buddy comedies such as “Midnight Run” and “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” the film will hit theaters this summer under the direction of Doug Liman, Damon’s collaborator on “The Bourne Identity.” Liman boasts a track record in action-comedy, notably with “Go” (1999). Damon rose to fame with “Good Will Hunting,” which he co-wrote with Affleck’s brother, Ben.
Affleck desired a buddy comedy role, but seeing limited opportunities, he followed Ben and Matt’s example by writing his own role. Liman expressed his joy in reuniting with Damon, witnessing his growth as an actor and collaborator.
“I was parachuted into a family,” said Liman. “With Bourne, I invited Matt into my world. But with Instigators, I was very aware of being dropped into Matt’s family. And all that history, positive and negative, is reflected on the screen.”
Last year, Damon reteamed with Ben Affleck for the Nike biopic *Air*, centering on Phil Knight.
“The Instigators is about two strangers hired for a heist,” Affleck told EW. “They become frenemies, and eventually friends, while Jack Harlow berates us, Paul Walter Hauser insults us, Ving Rhames pursues us, and Hong Chau saves our lives.”

Synopsis:
Rory, a desperate father played by Matt Damon, reluctantly teams up with ex-con Cobby (Affleck). Together, they plot to rob a corrupt politician of ill-gotten riches. However, their plan unravels, ensnaring them in a maelstrom of chaos. Pursued by law enforcement, bureaucratic tangles, and vengeful criminals, Rory and Cobby face a relentless onslaught in their desperate quest.
EW paraphrases the official synopsis, leaving some uncertainty about how “along the way, they somehow convince Rory’s therapist (Hong Chau) to join their ‘riotous getaway.'”
The Instigators will hit select theaters on August 2, followed by an Apple TV+ release on August 9.
