Josh Gad’s Chris Farley biopic, starring Paul Walter Hauser as Farley, has been acquired by New Line following intense competition. Gad will helm the film.

The biopic is based on “The Chris Farley Show: A Biography in Three Acts,” a New York Times best-seller written by Farley’s brother, Tom Farley Jr., and Tanner Colby. Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber adapted the book for screen, with the Farley family’s blessing. “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels and Erin David are producing the film for Broadway Video.

The film will chronicle the life of Chris Farley as one of his generation’s most extraordinary comic actors. Farley’s fame skyrocketed during his tenure on Saturday Night Live beginning in 1990, where he showcased his unparalleled talent alongside comedy legends like Adam Sandler, David Spade, Phil Hartman, and Rob Schneider. His iconic sketches, including “Van Down By the River,” and characters like Matt Foley, left an unforgettable mark. Farley’s success extended to the big screen with blockbusters like Tommy Boy (1995) and Black Sheep (1996). Tragically, his life was cut short in 1997 at the age of 33 due to a drug overdose.

Paul Walter Hauser is renowned for his Golden Globe-winning performance in “Black Bird.” He will lend his voice to Embarrassment in Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.” Hauser is slated to appear in Apple’s “The Instigators” and “Americana,” alongside Sydney Sweeney. Notable film credits include “Richard Jewell,” “I, Tonya,” and “Cruella,” while television appearances include “Cobra Kai.” Hauser has expressed his desire to portray the late comedian Chris Farley and has previously discussed a potential project with the Farley family.

Gad’s extensive portfolio spans Disney’s animated masterpieces “Frozen” and “Beauty and the Beast,” the acclaimed film adaptation “Murder on the Orient Express,” and Broadway triumphs like “Book of Mormon” and “Gutenberg!” His upcoming directorial debut will be the highly anticipated Chris Farley biopic.
