The Mad Max franchise continues its post-apocalyptic journey with “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” a prequel focusing on Imperator Furiosa’s origins. In an interview, creator George Miller revealed that the film will include a brief cameo of Max Rockatansky and his Interceptor vehicle, establishing the franchise’s chronological timeline and connecting “Furiosa” to the previous installments.
“During the preparation for ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ we also documented the events that transpired with Max in the year leading up to the film,” Miller stated. “As the current film nears its conclusion, the timeline reveals that Max’s presence was imminent because we are aware of his history. The writers have a comprehensive account of that year, and if the opportunity arises, I’d be eager to share it with you.”
Why Is Mad Max Getting a Prequel?
Miller conceived the idea for “Furiosa” while developing the script for “Fury Road.” He believed the story was too compelling to go untold.
To convey a constantly moving narrative and challenge the audience, Miller intentionally omitted explanations of Furiosa’s past, the Green Place, and the Citadel’s workings in “Mad Max.” They completed the screenplay before filming “Fury Road” to provide context for Furiosa’s character and the film’s setting. However, Miller desired to explore Furiosa’s story further if “Fury Road” was successful.
“This backstory emerged from the need to explain the world of ‘Fury Road,’ which unfolds within three days and two nights,” Miller stated. “It seeks to explain how this world came to be. Nico Lathouris and I penned an extended narrative, not a screenplay, detailing Max’s experiences the year before. This will be explored in the future. To develop ‘Fury Road,’ we had to explain every element, including Furiosa’s story. For each character, we crafted mini-stories. For instance, the Doof Warrior: how does a blind guitarist survive in a perilous wasteland? We explored these narratives to create a rich tapestry of characters within ‘Fury Road.'”
