Despite topping the box office, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s “The Fall Guy” underperformed expectations, grossing $28.5 million against its estimated range of $30-$35 million. Notably, the second-place slot was claimed by an unexpected contender, not “Challengers.”
The re-release of “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” for its 25th anniversary placed second at the box office with $8.1 million, surpassing “Challengers” (weekend earnings: $7.6 million). Despite comparable box office earnings to “The Fall Guy,” “Challengers” is considered a greater success due to its smaller production budget of $55 million compared to “The Fall Guy’s” $130 million.
As for the fourth place spot at the box office this weekend, the new horror film Tarot earned $6.5 million, which is a successful start for Screen Gem considering the film only cost $8 million to make. Additionally, the new The Garfield Movie debuted internationally to $22 million. The animated feature is hitting theaters in North America on May 24th.
